Former Gambia’s President, Yahya Jammeh stepped down on Saturday and went into exile in Equatorial Guinea.e lost a December election to President Adama Barrow, mediators said.

Jammeh has been holding onto power despite losing to Adama Barrow in an election that ended his 22-year rule on December 1.

He initially conceded defeat, but later changed his mind and started calling for fresh elections.

The winner, Adama Barrow took oath of office in Senegal last Thursday, forcing other West African states to intervene.

On Saturday, however, Jammeh agreed to step down and go into exile.

While confirming the news, the incumbent posted on Twitter: “I would like to inform you that the 2nd President of the Republic of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh has left Gambia.”
